Families raise the alarm over missing corpses in Edo hospital

There was pandemonium on Friday at the Central Hospital in Benin, Edo State, when some bereaved families and mourners raised the alarm over the disappearance of two corpses from the hospital morgue.
It was gathered that two bereaved families of the late Abifade Idemudia and late Lawrence Agbonlahor, who were accompanied by a large crowd of mourners, had besieged the morgue at about 8am to take the remains of their loved ones for interment, but were shocked to discover their corpses could not be found.
The situation was said to have left the mourners devastated, as none of the mortuary attendants was available to provide any explanation about the whereabouts of the corpses.
The incident drew a large crowd of passers-by, including others who had visited the morgue to pick up the remains of their loved ones, but were left stranded at the entrance of the hospital.
Some of them who later found their way in were seen making efforts to take the corpses of their loved ones away for fear of losing them.
It also drew the attention of anti-riot policemen, who were quickly drafted from the Anthony Enahoro Complex of the state House of Assembly on Kings Square.
It was gathered from a member of the Idemudia family, identified as Michael, that the number tag placed on their son was found on the remains of a dead woman, whose corpse the morgue attendants had wanted to release to them.
He said that his late father’s body was deposited in the mortuary on November 18, 2015 and wondered why his corpse got missing on the day of his burial, even when arrangements to accord him a befitting burial had been concluded.
He said, “We were rushing him to the hospital when he gave up and we brought him here when he died. We were looking for money to bury him. We came to check on 21st when they called me to come and pick up his clothes.”
