Uyo—OPERATIONS will soon commence at the multi-billion naira Ibom Specialist Hospital, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with the arrival of medical experts from outside the country.

Conducting newsmen round the hospital facility, yesterday, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, accompanied by the expatriates, said operations would start immediately after the test-run of the equipment.
Ukpong explained that many reasons such as taking care of practising license for the expatriate medical team, immigration and some logistic, delayed the take-off of operations at the hospital after it was commissioned in May, 2015 by the immediate past administration.
He said: “Those were some of the things we needed to put in place and now we have met those requirements that is why we are starting. As you can see, this is a multi-purpose specialist hospital with different sections. Doctors in charge of the different sections are here to test-run the medical equipment.”
“This is to ensure that the medical equipments are in order. And as soon as they complete that we will commence operations. But I can assure you that the equipment we have here are the latest and second to none in Africa.”
The Commissioner said that he was optimistic that with the capacities the medical experts recruited and the quality services that will be offered that the hospital will in a short time become a reference point in the whole of Africa.

MLS is tougher than Premier League: Drogba

LONDON Major League Soccer (MLS) offers a tougher challenge than the English Premier League and will soon be one of the best domestic competitions in world football, according to Chelsea great Didier Drogba.

The former Ivory Coast striker has just completed a successful first season with the Montreal Impact after leaving Chelsea in May.
"It's a different challenge (in the U.S.)," Drogba told Reuters in an interview. "People think it's easy to play there.
Believe me, it's more difficult than playing in the Premier League because of the travel.
"You can stay at an airport for three or four hours if you miss your flight, so that is what is really leveling the game.
"There are not a lot of away wins because when the teams arrive they are tired. There are also some very good players in the league," Drogba said.
"It's a growing league and I think it's going to be one of the most important and decisive leagues in the world in a few years."
Montreal qualified for the playoffs by finishing third in the Eastern Conference.
They beat Toronto FC in the knockout round before going out in the two-game Eastern Conference semi-finals where they lost to Columbus Crew.
Drogba scored 12 goals and claimed one assist in 14 regular season and playoff games for Montreal. His overall contribution helped the team out of a slump and ignited a stirring late-season run after they had failed to reach the playoffs in 2014.
The Ivorian said he was unsure what the future held beyond the one year remaining on his Impact contract.

NEW WAY OF LIFE

"I will have time during this year to think about whether I want to carry on or not," said the striker.
"I'm just enjoying playing, running everywhere, defending, scoring goals, traveling, going to new cities, discovering new plans and a new way of life."
In two spells at Chelsea, Drogba won the Premier League four times, the FA Cup four times and the Champions League in 2012 when he scored a late equalizer against Bayern Munich and then converted the winning penalty in a memorable shootout.
He hit 164 goals in 381 appearances for the London team and the fans showed their appreciation in 2012 by voting him the club's greatest ever player.
In his new autobiography 'Commitment', published by Hodder and Stoughton, Drogba said Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had promised him a role at the club once his playing days were over.
He was twice named African Player of the Year, won 104 caps and scored a record 65 goals for his country but the Ivorian is much more than just a footballer.
The 37-year-old is a United Nations goodwill ambassador while his Didier Drogba Foundation is building health clinics in his native country.
Drogba has given millions of dollars to charity over the years and his new book describes how all of his commercial earnings since 2007 have gone to his foundation.
Asked about his plans beyond his playing days, the man Time Magazine selected in 2010 as one of the world's 100 most influential people for his humanitarian work said he wanted to leave a lasting legacy.
"What I really want is to have an impact on people, to be able to have an impact on social things like my foundation or to be able to change things," explained Drogba. "I want to help people."
However, a career in politics is not on the agenda.
"No, that's not what I want to do," said Drogba. "I want to keep my freedom.

"I want to be able to touch more people, not just the people who believe in me. I want to be able to make people understand that they don't have to believe in me but I'm there to help."

US Muslim forced off plane cites Islamophobia

Being told to get off plane in front of passengers was "humiliating", says Kameelah Rasheed, who alleges discrimination.

After passing through regular security checks at Newark Liberty International Airport on her way to a holiday in Istanbul, Kameelah Rasheed was called for further questioning by customs officers.
She was later allowed on the United Airlines flight, but eventually forced to leave the aircraft ahead of takeoff to be interrogated by an FBI agent.
The 30-year-old Muslim American told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that the two-and-a-half-hour ordeal a day earlier has left her traumatised and unable to consider flying any more.
"It was an attempt to humiliate and ostracise me," she said.
"I think this happened because I'm Muslim, because I'm travelling to Istanbul, because they have power with no checks and balances, because security means violating people's rights, because there's a general lack [of understanding of] what safety means, because people don't understand basic geopolitical situations."
Al Jazeera has contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark Liberty airport, for comment.
Rasheed is one of a number of Muslims in the US, or people perceived to be Muslim, who say they have been on the receiving end of profiling since the attacks in Paris on November 13, which were claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.
Rasheed said that she was the only passenger of about 200 who was asked to leave the flight on Tuesday, as the customs officers confiscated her passport and phone.
"I was the only visibly Muslim person," said the New York resident, who wears a headscarf.
Rasheed, an artist, educator, Stanford University graduate, Fulbright scholar and contributing editor at The New Inquiry, added that while the airline had booked another ticket for her, she was scared of being targeted again on her onward journey and chose not to travel.
"I don't think there is a resurgence of Islamophobia after the Paris attacks. I think it never went away. It's becoming more legitimised.
"Right after 9/11, you could do it [commit hate crimes towards Muslims] for a couple of years and no one would blame you… And now after Paris, it's like, 'look at what they did, I can treat them how I want'. We didn't make any progress."

China journalist, 71, jailed five years

A Chinese court on Thursday reduced the seven-year jail sentence given to a 71-year-old Chinese journalist convicted of “leaking state secrets” by two years, her lawyer said after an appeal in a case condemned by free speech advocates.

Dozens of police officers blocked access to the Beijing high court, where the decision on Gao Yu’s appeal was announced.
The court reduced her seven year term to five, her attorney Mo Shaoping told AFP.
“We think she is innocent. The sentence is just lighter, it’s a slight improvement,” he added.
State security prevented foreign journalists and about 10 diplomats from standing near the court, and wrestled to the ground a woman who shouted slogans in support of Gao.
The veteran reporter has suffered heart problems during her detention, and Mo added there was a “possibility” she could be released on medical parole in the future.
A former winner of UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Prize, Gao has been a consistent critic of the ruling Communist party?s authoritarian policies.
A court convicted Gao in April of leaking a 2013 directive by the Communist party named “Document number 9” to a Hong Kong media outlet.
The document warned of the “dangers” of multiparty democracy, independent media, universal definitions of human rights and criticism of the party’s historical record, according to copies widely circulated online.
The hearing comes as China’s president, Xi Jinping, oversees a crackdown on dissent that has seen hundreds of lawyers, activists and academics detained in recent years, with dozens jailed.
China’s already close controls on the media have been further tightened, reporters say.
France-based Reporters Without Borders ranked China 176th out of 180 countries in its 2015 Press Freedom Index.
Gao’s jailing was condemned by human rights groups and free speech advocates, while Washington called for her “immediate” release and the EU demanded Beijing “review” her trial.
A consistent advocate for democracy and free speech, Gao was imprisoned following the government crackdown on student protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Her political writings saw her jailed for six years in the 1990s, also on a charge of “leaking state secrets”.
She was detained again in the lead-up to the Tiananmen crackdown’s 25th anniversary last year, and shown by state broadcaster CCTV making a “confession” under police detention, an increasingly regular spectacle in China.

Chicago police shooting video, worries Obama

US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he was “deeply disturbed” by graphic video footage showing a white Chicago police officer repeatedly shooting a black teenager as the teen walked away.

“Like many Americans, I was deeply disturbed by the footage of the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald,” Obama wrote on his official Facebook page.
Chicago police initially said that McDonald was high on the hallucinogen PCP, acting erratically, and that he lunged at officers with a knife when he was shot 16 times in 15 seconds in October 2014.
But a police dashcam video showed the teenager walking away when officer Jason Van Dyke – who was charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder over the death – opened fire and McDonald made no threatening gestures to justify the use of deadly force.
Prosecutors and city officials have come under intense criticism for trying to block the release of the video and taking so long to press charges against Van Dyke.
Demonstrators, who staged peaceful protests on Tuesday, liken McDonald’s killing to that of Michael Brown, the black teenager shot dead by a white policeman in Ferguson, Missouri last year, triggering 15 months of demonstrations in major US cities over perceived police brutality against black men.

Gravity will rip Martian moon apart to form dust and rubble ring

Mars will become the fifth ringed planet as the largest of its two moons disintegrate - in 20 to 70 million years, according to new data

The 10km-wide Stickney crater is the result of a massive impact in the moon’s past. The collision will have damaged material around the crater and potentially have weakened Phobos.
Mars is on course to become the fifth ringed planet in the solar system according to astronomers, who claim that its mini moon, Phobos, will one day disintegrate into a hoop of dust and rubble.
The small ball of rock is spiralling inexorably down towards Mars; when the tidal forces become too strong to withstand, Phobos will be ripped apart to leave a huge ring of material, much like that seen around Saturn, researchers say.
The act of cosmic violence would make Mars the first rocky world in the solar system to sport a ring, the others being the gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Phobos is the largest of the two Martian moons, but the cratered, dusty rock is a mere 22km across. It orbits the planet three times a day at only 6,000km above the surface. The second Martian moon, Deimos, is about half the size of Phobos and orbits much farther out.
Astronomers who track Phobos have found that the moon edges closer to Mars by 1.8cm a year. Depending on conditions, it will start to skim the top of the tenuous Martian atmosphere in 20 to 70 million years. What has been unclear was whether Phobos would break apart in orbit or slam into the Martian landscape.
To predict the fate of Phobos, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, gathered data on the moon’s density, its internal structure and the varying forces that wrench and pull it around, and fed them into a computer model.
One prominent feature on Phobos is the 10km-wide Stickney crater, the result of a massive impact in the moon’s distant past. The collision was not sufficient to destroy Phobos, but will have damaged material around the crater and potentially sent cracks running throughout the entire moon, weakening it considerably.
The models drawn up by Benjamin Black and Tushar Mittal show that Phobos is likely to survive its descent for a good while yet, but could start to break up in 20 to 40 million years’ time. But once Phobos starts to crumble, within six weeks it could produce a ring around Mars that holds much of the moon’s ten trillion tonnes of material. “In other words, ring formation will proceed very quickly,” the scientists write in the journal Nature Geoscience. Once formed, the Martian ring could last for a million to one hundred million years.
While damaged moon rock and lighter, more fractured material will fall off Phobos first, some denser lumps may survive the tidal forces and ultimately slam into the Martian surface. Those will not strike Mars with the force of typical asteroid and comet impacts, but come in much slower and at a shallower angle.
Earlier this month, Nasa scientists reported that channels on the surface of Phobos are probably the first outward signs of the moon being torn apart by the gravitational effects of Mars. Speaking at the Geological Society of America meeting in Baltimore, Terry Hurford of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said computer models of Phobos showed that the grooves had formed along the lines of greatest stress, suggesting they could be fault lines in the moon.
Spacecraft first captured images of the long grooves on Phobos in the 1970s, when the Viking and Mariner 9 probes visited Mars. Then, in 2008, the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter revealed that rather than being a solid lump of rock, Phobos was actually a bundle of loose rubble held together by a stronger outer layer of material.
Black and Mittal say it will take more missions to Phobos to find out if their prediction is right. Scientists have proposed a number of discovery missions to explore the moon, including the Phobos Surveyor project, which aims to land small hedgehog-like rovers onto the moon’s surface.

Safaree Samuels Disses Nicki Minaj

Safaree Samuels Disses Nicki Minaj On Twitter After American Music Awards: 'I Won An Award'

Safaree Samuels just dissed Nicki Minaj via Twitter, and it all had to do with the Young Money rapper winning a trophy at the 2015 American Music Awards.
Earlier today, we shared the news that Nicki won for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and thanked Drake during her acceptance speech.
Apparently, Safaree felt he should have been thanked too and took it upon himself to claim his ex's award. "Heard I won an award," he wrote. "The pen is always mightier than the sword. Dec 1rst, "It Is What It Is Vol. 2."
Samuel's tweet comes just days after news surfaced that he's suing Nicki for back royalties. According to numerous reports, the "Burner" spitter wants to be paid for writing on his exes albums and helping her put together some of her biggest hits.
At this time, it's not clear how much he's actually suing Nicki for, but presumably it's not for a small amount.
What is clear, however, is Nicki's frustration concerning the award show. As we reported earlier, some believed she was throwing shade at Jennifer Lopez after the Bronx beauty performed a rendition of "Anaconda," but people had it all wrong.
"Ya'll searching for a bad pic to post with all the beautiful pics from tonight floating around," wrote Minaj. "Lemme give ya'll some love, cuz the person who posted this clearly needs a hug."
Afterwards, the "All Eyes On You" lyricist praised her loyal Barbie fans and asked them to start circulating some of the nice photos from the awards ceremony.
"I also wanna give my babies more love, hugs and kisses for reppin' me tonight," wrote Nik. "Working on so much more amazing things to share with you. Tag these mofos in all the beautiful pics from tonight. LOL. We really had a great time."
As far as that shade filled tweet from Samuels, Nicki hasn't responded yet since she probably doesn't want to give him any more attention or fame.
Also, do you think the "Sabba Ranks" rapper sent that tweet just to promote his new mixtape? Please let us know in the poll question below.

Lucy the Australopithecus: Google doodle celebrates discovery of oldest hominid

Honoured in today's Google Doodle, 24 November is the 41st anniversary of the discovery of 'Lucy', the name given to a collection of fossilized bones that once made up the skeleton of a hominid from the Australopithecus afarensis species, who lived in Ethiopia 3.2 million years ago.

First discovered in 1973, the discovery of Lucy was remarkably 'complete' -- 40% of her skeleton was found intact, rather than just a handful of incomplete and damaged fossils that usually make up remains of a similar age.

Shortly after being dug up, it became apparent that Lucy was one of the most important fossils ever discovered, when researchers released that she belonged to a previously unknown species.

In honour of the momentous moment in archaeology, here's five things you may not know about Lucy.

She was named after The Beatles song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' After making the historic find, paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson headed back to his campsite with his team.

He put a Beatles cassette in the tape player, and when Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds came on, one of the group said he should call the skeleton Lucy.

"All of a sudden, she became a person," Johanson told the BBC.

Lucy walked upright One of the most important things about Lucy is the way she walked - by studying her bones, in particular the structure of her knee and spine curvature, scientists were able to discover that she spent most of her time walking on two legs - a striking human-like trait.

No-one knows how she died The few clues we have about Lucy's cause of death can only rule things out, rather than providing solid answers.

There's not much evidence of teeth-marks anywhere on her skeleton, suggesting she was not killed and scavenged by other animals after she died.

However, there is one tooth mark from a carnivore on the top of her left pubic bone - but it's not known whether this happened before she died, or whether she was bitten after.

Lucy currently lives in Ethiopia, near to where she was found The skeleton of Lucy currently lies hidden away from the public in a specially-constructed safe in the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, not far from where she was discovered.

Only a plaster replica of her skeleton is available to be seen by the public.

However, the real skeleton was taken on a tour of the US from 2007-2013, despite fears that the tour would damage it.
A number of other plaster casts of Lucy's remains are dotted around the world.

She was pretty short Australopithecus afarensis may have walked upright and looked somewhat human-like, but they were much smaller than we are.

Lucy died as a young but fully grown adult, and stood only 1.1m tall and weighed in at a paltry 29kg

Nicki Minaj Denies Dissing Jennifer Lopez

Nicki Minaj Denies Dissing Jennifer Lopez, Thanks Drake In Front Of Meek Mill And Causes Stir

Did Nicki Minaj throw some shade at Jennifer Lopez? That's one of the new rumors the Internet came up with over the past 24-hours.
Last night (Nov 22.) at the "American Music Awards 2015," Jennifer Lopez performed a medley of some of this year's hits, one of them being Nicki's "Anaconda."
During the performance one of the cameras panned over to Barbz and caught her facial expression. It's not like she frowned or rolled her eyes or anything, but the folks on social media instantly said Nicki wasn't pleased with J. Lo's rendition of her song.
"D---, J Lo," wrote DJ Akademiks. "Nicki Minaj facial expression says it all. We still love you, doe."
Afterwards, the Young Money queen responded and said she was only looking at her own expression in a nearby screen. "LOL. Says what all?" she wrote, responding to Akademiks. "I'm looking at my own face on the screen when I'm looking to the right. I turn back and look at her."
Nicki's acceptance speech for winning the Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist award also received a lot of attention, because she chose to thank Drake.
Usually, that wouldn't be all that strange, but considering her boyfriend Meek Mill was present, and he's still beefing with Drizzy, people on social media had plenty to say. While some believed it was classy for Barbz to shout out her label-mate, others considered it disrespectful to Mill.
Who knows? There's a good chance this entire beef will be coming to a close soon, because it's unlikely Drizzy with throw any more disses Meek's way or vice versa.
At this point, if Meek does blast Drake again it wouldn't be a good move, because it seems people are starting to forget how bad the Canadian spitter damaged him when "Back To Back" dropped. If he's smart, the Philly rapper will just move on and try to put the entire conflict in the past.
